Code of Ethics
When practising as Building Official, each SBOA member is expected to:
- Hold paramount the safety, health and welfare of the public and protection of the environment
- Respect the rights, dignity and worth of all other persons and treat others in accordance with human rights legislation
- Act with integrity, equity, fairness, courtesy, loyalty and good faith in all dealings with others, give credit where it is due, and accept, as well as give, honest and fair professional criticism
- Behave with appropriate decorum, and uphold and enhance the honour and dignity of Building Officials and the profession
- Promote health and safety within workplaces
- Offer services, advise on or undertake assignments only in areas of competence
- Practice in a careful and diligent manner, in compliance with applicable legislation
- Act as faithful agents of clients or employers, maintain confidentiality and avoid conflicts of interest but, where such conflict arises, fully and immediately disclose the circumstances to the employer or client
- Participate in professional development and keep informed about codes, construction practices and materials, to maintain competence and advance knowledge
- Interpret issues in an objective and truthful manner, and present clearly to employers and clients the possible consequences if decisions or judgments are overruled or disregarded
In addition to the foregoing, each SBOA Certified Building Official must agree to:
- Comply with the relevant provisions of the certification scheme
- Limit claims of ability to within the scope of the certification
- Uphold the integrity of the certification process
- Stop using the certification if it is suspended or revoked
- Not use the certificate in a misleading way.
Code of Conduct
In addition to the provisions of the Code of Ethics, all SBOA volunteers are expected to:
- Conduct themselves openly, professionally, lawfully and in good faith in the best interests of SBOA
- Uphold and advance the integrity, honour and dignity of SBOA
- Strive to increase public knowledge and awareness of SBOA and building regulations
- Exercise due diligence in upholding their fiduciary responsibility to the membership of SBOA
- Avoid occurrence of or appearance of conflict of interest and personal bias and, where such situations arise, fully and immediately disclose the circumstances
- Respect the confidentiality appropriate to issues of a sensitive nature, pay attention to the rights of members, and protect the privacy of personal information
- Give sufficient opportunity of expression, due consideration and weight to all opinions of other members in meetings, and respect the decisions of SBOA officers and directors
- Commit the time required and participate actively when volunteering for SBOA
