Is anybody else sick of the longest winter yet? I am starting to think that the “Game of Thrones” series is not based on fantasy. In case you don’t follow the series; winters last several years in Westeros.

In spite of the weather we have been relatively busy in Swift Current and I hear everyone else has been working steady as well.

Since we met in Saskatoon last October we have had a few things going on.

We set up a booth at the SUMA and SARM Tradeshows to promote the SBOA in an effort to get our message and name out to the municipalities. Thanks again to the members who helped man the booth and to Building Standards Division for including us in their booth space. I think we were fairly successful in introducing the SBOA to municipal politicians.

We once again held a very successful training program in February, in Saskatoon with both Part 9 and Part 3 courses being well attended. I believe the courses were well presented and everyone who attended found them very worthwhile. Thanks to Chris and Dale for their hard work in putting this on and thanks to all of the members who support the program by attending.

I was asked by the executive to send a letter to Minister Reiter in regards to the outstanding issues regarding training and the current system of Class 2 and Class 3 licensing exams. We have to keep our concerns in front of the Ministry in the hopes that one day the licensing issues will be rectified.

I have just returned from ACBOA meetings in Winnipeg where we continue to work towards developing core code training for all levels and for all Canadian building officials. It is our hope that someday soon we will have current code training available for all jurisdictions that will be accepted in all provinces for certification.

At last fall’s conference in Saskatoon the executive gave notice that we would be presenting two amendments to our bylaws for your consideration at this conference;

The first amendment we would like to present is for a change to the makeup of the executive by removing; ” –treasurer” from line (c) and reinserting treasurer as line (d) and adding a new line (f):

DIRECTORS

6(1) the directors of the Association shall consist of:

  1. A president,
  2. A vice president,
  3. A secretary-treasurer,
  4. The immediate past president, and
  5. All standing committee chairpersons.

DIRECTORS

6(1) the directors of the Association shall consist of:

  1. A president,
  2. A vice president,
  3. A secretary,
  4. A treasurer,
  5. The immediate past president, and
  6. All standing committee chair-persons.

It was felt that by adding one more seat to the executive and splitting the secretary- treasurer role we could split the work load. We found it hard to attract newcomers to step up to a role that looks very intimidating.

Therefore; I so move that the Secretary- treasurer Position listed under Section 6(1), (c) be split into to two positions and that we direct the Secretary to make the necessary amendments to the bylaw.

Seconded by: The second amendment we would like to propose is a little house keeping; currently the Section 5 of the bylaw reads:

MEETINGS OF MEMBERS

5(1) An annual meeting of members shall be held April at a time and place to be fixed by the directors in accordance with the expressed wish of the members.

The executive have discussed this requirement and we have found that it is restrictive as there may be instances where we may need to meet in March or May.

Therefore; I so move that Section 5 Sentence (1) be amended to read:

An annual meeting of members shall be held each spring at a time and place to be fixed by the directors in accordance with the expressed wish of the members, seconded by:

Once again I would like to invite anyone who is interested in joining the executive to let us know and become a committee member, you would be welcome to sit at the executive meeting table with us and get your feet wet.

And as always this is your SBOA if you have concerns or suggestions about how it is being run please let us know.
